Medicare Enrollment: Key Dates and Deadlines You Should Know

Understanding key Medicare enrollment dates is essential to ensure you get the benefits you need without any penalties.

Initial Enrollment Period medical, appointment, doctor, medicare

The initial enrollment period (IEP) is crucial for new Medicare beneficiaries. Your IEP begins three months before you turn 65 and lasts for seven months, ending three months after your birthday month.

During this period, you can sign up for Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) without facing penalties.

General Enrollment Period

If you miss your IEP, don’t worry; you have another chance. The general enrollment period runs from January 1 to March 31 each year. If you enroll during this period, your coverage will begin on July 1.

Annual Enrollment Period

The annual enrollment period (AEP) is for those already enrolled in Medicare. The AEP takes place from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 each year. During this time, you can change your Medicare Advantage plan or switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan.

Special Enrollment Period

Certain life events can qualify you for a special enrollment period (SEP). If you move, lose other health coverage or experience changes in your household, you may be eligible for an SEP. The length of the SEP varies depending on the event, so it’s essential to check the specific rules related to your situation.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period

If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you have additional options. This period runs from January 1 to March 31 each year.

During this time, you can switch between Medicare Advantage plans or return to Original Medicare.

Medigap Open Enrollment Period

Medicare beneficiaries who are 65 and older can enroll in any Medigap policy sold in their state during the six-month Medigap open enrollment period, which starts the first month of Medicare Part B coverage. After this one-time enrollment period, Medicare recipients may pay more for Medigap coverage or their application may be denied.
